Projekt Ilaiyaraaja Season III — 178/365 — Eduthu Naan Vidava

I never thought I would write a eulogy in this series. How do I start? I have always started my new year with SPB ecstatically wishing the Tamil World “Happy New Year” in Ilaiyaraaja’s music. In a way, it’s my sentiment to listen to the song on the New Year’s eve night (even when I was watching the London Fireworks in 2014). Truth be told, he is not my most favourite singer in Tamil cinema. Still, his voice always felt like a neighbourhood uncle who can make you happy by singing beautiful songs (he played this role in a TV Series). It’s not about the technicality of the songs that he had sung but the sheer joy he brings to people when he sings and performs on stage. When he had a brief spat with Ilaiyaraaja (which I think was created by someone else), I valiantly defended Ilaiyaraaja but never degraded him. I know at some point in time they would come back together and make us happy. I was delighted they did.

I see death differently. These are inevitable moments in our life. But I feel sad that we couldn’t give him a proper send-off. That’s the least we could have done to a person who made us happy with his singing. Thank you, SPB. You will be missed, but I will still start every year with your voice as I always did.

The song I have chosen today is a celebration of his singing and his friendship with Ilaiyaraaja. Let’s celebrate the life of SPB.

When I sing
Will the moon not arrive
Will it not offer itself for me to cajole it
Tell me your story (or it could be variations)
