Projekt Ilaiyaraaja Season III — 349/365 — Engumulla Allah

It’s election time in Tamil Nadu and one of the important aspects of TN elections is the campaign songs used by both the Dravidian parties. But my favourites are the songs by Nagoor Hanifa. There is something magnetic about his voice.

I haven’t posted any song of Nagoor Hanifa this season and I have already posted the first song composed by Ilaiyaraaja (as Pavalar Brothers) for an Independent Devotional album in 1974. I was dabbling what to post today and I chose this one because he sang it with SP Balasubrahmanyam.

Engumulla Allah is a devotional song from Dharmaseelan but also acts as a filler during a serious sequence in the movie. That’s why you can listen to extensive strings based interludes that evokes the intensity of the situation. The main song is a beautiful tune with traditional instruments that you would expect from a Tamil Muslim devotional song and of course you can hear the shehnai inbetween.

Nagoor Hanifa is actually playbacking for Goundamani in the song and also, you can see Isari Ganesh (now a movie producer) in the interlude sequences.
