So, Frontend Fridays is basically a weekly meetup we do for designers & creative coders — which kinda happens every Friday. (duh)

Think of it like netflix & chill, but with geeky talks & creative design.

It is when we gather (with pizza and beers on hand) to talk about design and everything about frontend development. Sometimes we do workshops that range on various stuff from interface design, UX and branding, to semantic coding & frontend frameworks. We also enjoy keeping the design team in the loop by sharing the current projects we’re all working on.

One of #FrontendFridays signature is to fully support Symph’s Work Hard. Play Hard(er) scheme. One way to do it, for example:

welcome to the dark side

What is Code in the Dark?

I can’t really recall how i discovered this, I think it was thru the design blogs i was following on Facebook. Anyway.

Code in the Dark is a frontend coding competition where we try to implement a design but with a twist: you do it in 15mins, no browser previews, no code completion or use of any frameworks — just pure html/css. And the closest implementation, wins!

Everyone is welcome to join. You could even invite your crush and show-off your awesome frontend coding skills, with the hopes of impressing her/him.

Aside from the beaming neon lights, loud EDM background music playing and cold beer, we definitely realized a few things like:
- inspect element is your best friend
- thank god for fully-featured text-editors & frameworks for making life easier

And a word of advice from the winner:

Presence of mind, have mindful meditation in the morning, and don’t forget to enjoy the moment!

— Ma.Lourdes Arcipe, Symph Code in the Dark Champion

Yes, we are going to do this again

We are most probably going do it again but this time — we’re gonna make it open and official in Cebu! Keep posted!

Shout out to the night’s watch (you know who you are) for helping me organize the first one, ashley/emman for documenting it, and to symph’s founders: dave, dan + albert for supporting my crazy ideas (i’m still looking forward to my proposal for pole dancers & chocolate fountains in the office) peace!

edit: interested in organizing a #CodeInTheDark event near you? check out codeinthedark.com for more details - brought to you by the awesome guys at Tictail :)
