The Cebu city tech scene is evidently growing. With tech hubs, communities and events sprawling from everywhere, careers in the tech industry is looking very promising — and women are rising up to the challenge in this male-dominated industry.

The Tech Ladies Intiative

Allison Esposito founded Tech Ladies whose mission is to connect women with the best opportunities in tech, and to connect companies with the best women techmakers. The vision for Tech Ladies is not mainly just to connect women with any tech job, but to connect them with the right job.

What started as a casual scroll through Medium articles sparked an idea for Justine Win, a UI/UX from Iloilo to initiate a Tech Ladies meetup. Thus, the first ever Tech Ladies Meetup in the Philippines. And it’s happening in Cebu!

Tech Ladies Cebu

While most Tech Ladies meetups happening all over the world are initiated to solve the problems with being in a male-dominated environment, this one in Cebu is created solely to connect for a start.

In a male dominated industry, it can be quite challenging to for a woman to stand out, succeed or even adjust to her environment. And while we all value and learn from our male co-workers and friends, learning from women with how they approach their careers in tech is a different kind of empowering and exciting feeling too.

Justine was able to rally 40 ladies in less than a month for the Philippines’ first Tech Ladies meetup, organized by the Cebu community. And it was done in less done a month.

We feel you, Nicole.

We invited 3 speakers to speak about the three key careers in tech — development, design and marketing.

Fayie Mojado is a Python Developer. She’s been coding this programming language for four years and counting.
Rochel Abrasaldo is the current Director of Product at PhotoUp, an industry leading photo editing solution for real estate photographers. She oversees the successful design, development, and deployment of all product offerings of their company.
Crystal Faith Neri is a passionate Content Marketer. She’s a graduate of the Academy of Art in San Francisco and is now a key member of Cebu-based startup, Tallant Asia.

It was great to see everyone participating, asking questions, sharing their talents as well as their stories. The atmosphere was filled with fun and energy that only women can radiate. We had an awesome time meeting the ladies be it from different tech companies to freelancers, to a student even!

Thank you so much to everyone who joined the meetup — each of you made it a success!
