The Symph Space
Symph has a reputation of providing a very unconventional workplace to its team. At the moment of writing, we wish we could tell you the design principles as to why our office is themed this way, or why our designer’s corner is painted to reflect their creative style and character, or why our bathrooms have television sets in them. But we are not there yet, what we can only brag to you is that we have an empty building all to ourselves now.
Having started our early days in a small space that requires us to crawl under someone else’s table to get us to our respective corners, (because crawling was more convenient compared to walking over someone’s laptop on the table) owning this bare space, is more than what we could’ve dreamt of.
The Work & Play ground
The whole Symph workforce is on the third floor — a whole floor committed to become an adult playground much more than what it is now.
No one has a private office, not even our founders, ideally because Symph is about communication and teamwork. We believe that a space with less barriers inspires productivity, creativity and collaboration.
The third floor opens to a ping pong table — at least it was a pingpong table to begin with. It slowly evolved into a skype booth for project managers, an extended work table, a do not disturb table, a conference table aka pongference.
Another distinct feature of the office is the wall of whiteboard. This is where we do visualizations for our brainstorming sessions. Notice how famous geniuses are always photographed with equations written on a huge blackboard as their background, we’re kind of aiming for that vibe too. kidding. But it does help us in getting ideas into action.
We work everywhere we want in the office. We do not have designated individual spaces, but it is nice to note that each table has created a personality of its own; the almost always empty table belongs to businessdevs who are usually on-field assignments (so it’s the cleanest), the table occupied mostly by designers are filled with action figures, sketchpads, ipad pros, rugby, — you know, usual artist stuff. And the table where founders are usually huddled into are piled with papers and a French press coffee maker.
Of course, we have bean bags — because how can a cool office not have bean bags, right? We also have lounge chairs, one I’d like to fondly call therapy chairs and they kind of work that way. All this to encourage us to work comfortably, and to encourage our work hard, play hard scheme.
More than just space
The Symph Space, although is still mostly space holds so much room for dreams, potential and crazy but possible design ideas. Right now it’s a work space, a yoga-space, a biking space, 7-minute exercise space, eating space, concert space, pep-talk and meeting space all huddled into one floor.
On top of everything, we want a space that feels like home — in all its definitions.
So maybe we are not yet in the list of The Top 100 Most Awesome company spaces in the world. Our physical aesthetics and fixtures may not yet qualify, but if work atmosphere and team spirit were to be part of the category, I’m pretty sure we’d make it to a hefty upper half of that list.
