The Spark of Inspiration

Inspiration, burning the midnight oil, the oil of intention, the alchemical spark that ignites the fire of the crucible, the heat that turns lead into gold.

The spark of inspiration is what turns a random passing thought from the recesses deep inside you, into a force that pulls you from your slumber and won’t allow you to rest until you’ve imprinted the ground with that spark from the heavens.

The spark of inspiration can be thought of as a divine spark. It is what gives you the drive to work late into the night to burn that midnight oil. It is what drives you when you are tired, or when things are not going your way, or you think there is nothing left in you.

It is what drives you when you are writing,

Sheet after sheet of the screenplay

Or page after page of the business plan

Or screen after screen of computer code

Or chapter after chapter of the book

It is the spark that can ignite a business idea

Or drive a crusade

Or explore a concept

Or write some words that will inspire a nation

That’s what happened when Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history read “The Hill We Climb”. She ignited the spark of inspiration. Her task was monumental. With the world watching she was to deliver a poem about national unity to recite at President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

She was only about ½ way through creating the poem when rioters stormed the halls of Congress at the Capital on Jan. 6. She spent the next hours writing the following, well into the night:

“We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it,

Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.

And this effort very nearly succeeded.

But while democracy can be periodically delayed,

It can never be permanently defeated”

At 16 she was named Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles. Then a few years later she became the National Youth Poet Laureate while studying at Harvard. She had fallen in love with poetry and poetry would become her North Star.
