August 21 — Anglian Water Leverages AI-Power Energy Storage Technology in Water Treatment Facilities
Anglian Water plans to install an AI-based energy storage machine system in its water treatment facilities. The system will provide a real-time energy consumption balancing service and increase the lifespan of storage machines. The AI system was designed by Open Energi and is expected to be full operational by next year.
August 21 — TraceLink Plans to Use AI & Blockchain Tools for Drug Tracking
TraceLink closes a US$93 million funding round led by Georgian Partners. TraceLink says the investment will help its AI-based platform enable customers to track and exchange drug data, while a new blockchain technology feature will ensure that pharmaceutical industry organizations can meet track and trace standards under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act.
August 27 — “Shoplist.com by Crooz” Introduces an AI Image Search Function
Japanese e-commerce website “Shoplist.com by Crooz” launches an AI image search feature. When a user uploads an image, the service will automatically match and recommend similar products from the Shoplist catalogue. The AI image search function can also analyze user preferences and trends based on the images uploaded.
August 27 — Translations.com Enables AI-based Subtitling tool
Leading translation and enterprise localization technology solutions provider Translations.com has developed an AI-powered subtitling tool for Dutch wildlife and nature television channel Love Nature 4K. The tool enables voiceover and subtitling solutions which can help producers more effectively reach global audiences.
August 28 — JP Morgan Hires Senior Google AI Executive
JP Morgan poaches Google’s head of product management for cloud-based artificial intelligence Apoorv Saxena, who will lead the investment bank’s artificial intelligence and machine-learning service. Saxena will also take the lead on JP Morgan’s asset and wealth management AI technology.
August 28 — Microsoft OneDrive Leverages AI to Help Users Make Searchable Video Transcripts
Microsoft OneDrive introduces an AI-based media search feature that displays user-timestamped quotes alongside the media viewer itself and provides a new user search box tool for video transcriptions.
August 29 — Western Union and SpeedPay Developing AI-based Payment Service
Western Union and its subsidiary SpeedPay launch a collaboration with virtual assistant solution company Beguided to offer customers an efficient payment experience and an AI-based self-service platform. The platform will be fully automated and available 24 hours a day.
August 30 — Google and Harvard Collaborate to Predict Earthquake Aftershocks
Google and Harvard University jointly publish their work on predicting earthquake aftershock locations with neural networks in the journal Nature. The neural network trained on data from more than 131,000 earthquakes and aftershocks and performs more accurately than the previously used model.
August 30 — Microsoft Develops AI-powered Web Design Tool
Microsoft announces Sketch2Code, an AI-powered Web design tool. Sketch2code is an AI-based image processing model that can convert hand-drawn web page designs into HTML webpage code using prebuilt algorithms. This service is now part of the Azure Cloud platform for Microsoft users.
August 31 — Facebook Unveils AI-Based Language Translation Approach
Facebook unveils a new translation method that removes the need for a parallel corpus. The technique doesn’t require matching training data, removing the need for pre-translated texts and enabling translation between more languages. This approach will help Facebook users share posts between languages.
