AI Self-Evolution: How Long-Term Memory Drives the Next Era of Intelligent Models

Large language models (LLMs) like GPTs, developed from extensive datasets, have shown remarkable abilities in understanding language, reasoning, and planning. Yet, for AI to reach its full potential, models must be able to evolve continuously during inference — an essential concept known as AI self-evolution.

In a new paper Long Term Memory: The Foundation of AI Self-Evolution, a research team from Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute, Princeton University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanda Group investigates AI self-evolution. Their work examines how models enhanced with Long-Term Memory (LTM) can adapt and evolve through interaction with their environments, a key step toward achieving more dynamic AI.

The researchers argue that true intelligence goes beyond simply learning from existing datasets; it must also include the capacity for self-evolution, a trait resembling human adaptability.
