On the Information Bottleneck Theory of Deep Learning
In this work, researchers study the information bottleneck (IB) theory of deep learning, which makes three specific claims: first, that deep networks undergo two distinct phases consisting of an initial fitting phase and a subsequent compression phase; second, that the compression phase is causally related to the excellent generalization performance of deep networks; and third, that the compression phase occurs due to the diffusion-like behavior of stochastic gradient descent.

Large Batch Optimization for Deep Learning: Training BERT in 76 minutes
For BERT training, the proposed optimizer enables use of very large batch sizes of 32868 without any degradation of performance. By increasing the batch size to the memory limit of a TPUv3 Pod, BERT training time can be reduced from 3 days to just 76 minutes.

Quantum Adversarial Machine Learning
In this paper, researchers explore different adversarial scenarios in the context of quantum machine learning. The research team finds that similar to traditional classifiers based on classical neural networks, quantum learning systems are likewise vulnerable to crafted adversarial examples, independent of whether the input data is classical or quantum.

‘Brains Are Amazing’ — Neuroscientists Discover L2/3 Human Neurons Can Compute the XOR Operation
When talk of artificial neural networks began some fifty years ago the idea was to mimic the behaviour and function of the neurons in human brains — a premise that has more or less survived to this day. But new research now suggests scientists may have severely underestimated the power and potential of our neurons.
