Google Cloud announced today that Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science Dean Dr. Andrew Moore will join Google Cloud to lead its AI efforts at the end of this year. The company also announced that its Chief AI Scientist Dr. Fei-Fei Li will return to Stanford University this fall. Dr. Li will continue in her role as an artificial intelligence and machine learning advisor with Google Cloud.

Last month, Dr. Moore sent an email to colleagues and students saying that he had accepted a new position outside of CMU. The university subsequently confirmed his departure in a statement. Dr. Moore joined CMU as a faculty member in 1993 and became a tenured professor in 2000. He was appointed Dean of the Computer Science School in 2014.

A world-renowned computer scientist, Dr. Moore applies statistical methods and mathematical formulas to identify patterns and extract meaning from massive quantities of data in fields ranging from Web search to astronomy to medical records. His research also extends into robotics and other automated systems.

Dr. Moore previously worked for Google from 2006 to 2014, where he founded and led Google’s Pittsburgh research center, which now includes more than 275 employees. Dr. Moore will be based out of Google Pittsburgh in his new capacity.

Dr. Li meanwhile will return to Stanford University as originally planned, where she will serve as a professor and Director of Stanford AI Lab. Dr. Li took a sabbatical two years ago and joined Google Cloud as Chief AI Scientist. Under her guidance, Google Cloud rolled out a number of products and services that won favour in the AI community, such as AutoML, which can train custom vision models for specific use cases.
