ACM, SIGCHI, and the Economics of Open Access Publishing
Publishing has material costs, and understanding the economics of non-profit publishing is important for meaningful discussions about open access. Scholarly societies are non-profit organizations that sustain important community activities by reinvesting revenue from various sources, including publishing. If we want universal gold open access, we need to explore other economic models or reduce community activities
Google Favors Temporary Facial Recognition Ban as Microsoft Pushes Back
The regulation of facial recognition is emerging as a key disagreement among the world’s biggest tech companies, with Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai suggesting a temporary ban, as recently suggested by the EU, might be welcome, while Microsoft’s chief legal officer Brad Smith cautions against such intervention.
Advbox: A Toolbox to Generate Adversarial Examples That Fool Neural Networks
Advbox is a toolbox to generate adversarial examples that fool neural networks in PaddlePaddle, PyTorch, Caffe2, MxNet, Keras, TensorFlow and it can benchmark the robustness of machine learning models.
The Synthinel-1 Dataset: A Collection of High Resolution Synthetic Overhead Imagery for Building Segmentation
Researchers develop an approach to rapidly and cheaply generate large and diverse virtual environments from which we can capture synthetic overhead imagery for training segmentation CNNs. Using this approach, generate and publicly-release a collection of synthetic overhead imagery — termed Synthinel-1 with full pixel-wise building labels.
RobBERT: a Dutch RoBERTa-based Language Model
Researchers used RoBERTa, a robustly optimized BERT approach, to train a Dutch language model called RobBERT. Researchers show that RobBERT improves state of the art results in Dutch-specific language tasks, and also outperforms other existing Dutch BERTbased models in sentiment analysis.

Google Introduces Flax: A Neural Network Library for JAX
Google recently introduce Flax — a neural network library for JAX that is designed for flexibility. Flax can train neural networks by forking an example from its official GitHub repository. When it comes to modifying models, developers need no longer add features to the framework, they can simply modify the training loop (such as train_step setting) to achieve the same result.
