At a press conference in Beijing today US chipmaker Intel and Chinese tech pioneer ByteDance announced they will collaborate on setting up an AI research lab, talent training, and development of AI applications.

The lab will focus on AI innovation and be located in ByteDance’s data centre, although the companies have not revealed any additional details.

ByteDance was founded in 2012 “to combine the power of artificial intelligence with the growth of mobile internet to revolutionize the way people consume and receive information.” The company uses various AI technologies in its services: recommender systems, voice recognition, computer vision, natural language processing, etc. Principal products include Jinri Toutiao, an AI-powered news aggregation platform; and Douyin (Tic Tok), a short video platform with a massive user base.

ByteDance-backed apps require significant processing capability to manage the data. “Jinri Toutiao has massive computing and storage resources. We have more than 50 PB of daily data processing capacity, and our data storage is greater than 1500 PB. Infrastructure is the key to support the app’s development,” says ByteDance Vice President Yang Zhenyuan.

The Intel-ByteDance collaboration aims to leverage both companies’ strengths in tech development to advance AI innovations. Intel will provide support in software, hardware and other technologies to complement ByteDance’s data processing capabilities. Intel will also provide optimization solutions for ByteDance’s AI app and other products.
