If you’re looking for ‘momentary-motivation’, the type motivation that lasts for only a short period of time then you’re probably better off getting yourself a cup of coffee or some shot of an energy drink. Here, we’re also not going to talk about money motivation or materialistic type motivation because that type of motivation quickly fizzles out.

Instead, we’re going to share with you the real secret behind motivation. The intrinsic things that foster real motivation.Here, you’re going to learn about ‘long-lasting’ motivation. The type of motivation that gets you springing out of bed in the morning before your alarm clock goes off. You won’t need that dose of “#MondayMotivation” because motivation will already be flowing through you.

5 Strategies on How to Motivate Yourself

1. Be Absolutely Clear

Anyone who’s ever been taught to set personal goals would have heard the importance of SMART goals and setting deadlines. Knowing what you want and being absolutely clear about it, is of utmost importance to building self-motivation. Think of it as the target you’re aiming for. If I were to ask you, “What do you want?” would you know the answer? In order to motivate yourself, it’s important to first and foremost know, exactly, what it is you want.

But, there’s more to it. What you want must be something that you can realistically aim for and something that excites you. Is it to lose weight? To make more money? Or something else? Whatever it is, just as if you were setting personal goals, be absolutely clear about it then — put a deadline on it. If you answered something along the lines of “I want to lose weight” or “I want to make more money” that won’t really motivate you. Instead, translate those ‘wants’ into something that actually means something to you. Here’s an example:

  • Want: “I want to lose weight”
  • Translation: “I want to lose 20 pounds so I look amazing in my wedding dress in six months”

What’s the difference between the two? Substance. The first has none while the second does. ‘Substance’ is what drives your emotions and feelings in a way that a simple statement can’t. ‘Substance’ is what makes your goals meaningful in a way that will motivate you every time you think about it.

2. Have Purpose

Real motivation, the type of motivation that comes from within — comes from a deep sense of purpose. A sense of purpose that makes us feel fulfilled. When we’re “feeling it”, motivation can be very powerful. However, when we don’t have a clear purpose and we’re not feeling motivated, it can affect everything we do.

Having a purpose is about knowing your “Why?” Why do you want or need it? Why is it important to you? If your goal is to lose weight, your Why might be because you want to look great in all the photos taken on your wedding day. It might be because you want to feel more self-confident so you can go on more dates. Or, your purpose could be simply because you want to live healthier and have more energy.

Whatever it might be, the Why must be important and mean something to you. The stronger the Why, the stronger the purpose and the more motivated you will be. Try to discover what makes you tick and use that in a way to help motivate you. Tap into your emotions and find out Why you want what you want.

3. Keep a Routine

Struggling to muster up the energy to go to the gym? To work on that assignment? To study? Or, to keep yourself motivated at work, home, or school? Then establish a routine. Not only does a routine help with building motivation but it also helps give you certainty about what it is you’re going to do with your day.

“One of the most important things people lack is a routine” Rick Daman writes in his post for Timesonline.com. As an advocate for routines to build motivation, Rick goes on to advise those simple daily routines are what set us up for consistent motivation — leading to success.

Routines can be as simple as making your bed first thing in the morning. It could be spending time reviewing your goals. Or, starting your day by spending a few minutes being in a state of gratitude. The trick is to keep a routine that gets you motivated and keeps you motivated. Try new things, one at a time, for a few weeks. Find what ‘sticks’ and what gets you excited and inspired. Then, use it to build a routine that works for you.

A great way to keep up routines and stay motivated is to set rules for yourself. Rules that will help make the best use of your time and energy. For example, it’s easy to plant yourself in front of the TV and say “just one more episode.” But if you have a rule that when the clock strikes 8pm it’s time to turn off the TV and get yourself up from the sofa, that will help you avoid slumping and keep your motivation engines running.

4. Practice Gratitude

In addition to the many health benefits of gratitude, being grateful can help fuel your “motivational tank.” It can be the first thing you do the moment you wake up. Or, it could be the last thing you do before you go to sleep. Whatever works for you. What’s important is that you spend at least 5 minutes every day to be in a state of gratitude. In a Forbes article on motivation, William Vanderbloemen shares the sentiment: “A person who is grateful is motivated to face challenges with optimism.”

Personally, I prefer to end my day by being thankful. It’s a way to surface everything that is good, great, and right about my life which puts me in a state of gratitude and — keeps me motivated. Like attracts like. The more you are grateful, the more you have to be grateful for. The more you have to be grateful for, the more motivated you will feel. Practice gratitude every day or, as Audri Taylors put it in a post on The University Herald:

“Practice Thanksgiving Day, every single day”

Give it a try and finish this sentence: Right now, I’m Grateful for…

5. Reward Yourself

Often overlooked is the act of rewarding ourselves. Whether the reward is to take the family to Disneyland, hit the mall for a spot of shopping, or go out for ice cream, big or small, it’s important to reward yourself. Take the time to give yourself credit for your achievements and allow yourself to enjoy your rewards.

One way to do this is to establish milestones. At each milestone you reach, have a plan to reward yourself for an accomplishment well deserved. By rewarding ourselves, we give ourselves downtime which also helps to avoid ‘burnout’. Remember, an important part of staying motivated is to reward yourself. Hit the reset button every now and then. It’ll not only keep you motivated — but happy too!
