Mela woke abruptly from her fitted sleep to the sound of Metallica’s , Welcome Home blaring from her alarm. Seemed a pretty fitting song given her current location in a disused ___1____. (🎶 🎧 Missing word can be found in Metallica’s-Welcome Back, word #81).
This is the extent of our preparation. I have been in confinement for 5months and 26 days, going out of my mind listening to mostly old rock music and watching old movies, because it’s the only entertainment available that’s not connected to a network. All this to insure nobody else’s DNA ends up piggy backing on me when I attempt to pass the security scanners in the tunnels. All the planning hinged on this one ,critical, meticulously planned ….guess!

This was it though , today was finally here! Months of training and years of preparation all brought down to a 2 hour window. Despite the outward bravado Mela projects, inside she feels horribly inadequate and terrified to her core. She was already feeling the need to quit, to just give up and accept what was happening to the planet and herself. But as much as she wanted to, she couldn’t. EVI was the future no, IS the future. This is way bigger than Mela, WAAY bigger than everyone in the team, at least that’s what everyone tells themselves to try and help themselves deal with a VERY real possibility of death. It doesn’t help, that mixture of fear and dread that was souring Melas’ stomach right now. She felt a little like the bad dream she had about her parents and the pain that it caused her , was contributing to her mood. Instead of the feeling of relief and peace, Melia felt herself growing more distant from everyone else. It wasn’t a big deal though. Her team was still her team. Or at least most of them. Everyone else had more time. All the other teams could wait a bit longer. But everything hinged on Mela and her teammates . A new day would come. And depending on how today went, the future would possibly have a different narrative.
The other team members were more optimistic… Huh at least they pretended to be. Easy for them when all they had to do was create a distraction , and come pick her up after,….if she made it that far. I guess that is the best part about being the “chosen one” , doesn’t matter if the only reason you were chosen was because of some randy doctor nearly two decades ago got a prostitute pregnant. Well if that is how you change the world, who am I to say any different. Today was it for her, her only chance. For her and for this planet , maybe even the universe. On a positive note this was the last day that she would spend in confinement. At this point, I’m pretty sure that no one has any idea what will happen to me when I get out from HEADQUARTERS inner sanctum. Even my mother wasn’t sure, but let’s not bring her into this…Melara, my “real” mother will be waiting for me on the other side, you can be certain of that! Despite thinking it many times, I have never dared to ask if I’m even allowed to leave. Well that’s enough self pity and doubt , I better get myself up and ready to finally take the next step…!
