Getting the right people to work for you is a challenging task these days during the current labor shortage, but onboarding new hires can be even more so without a proper way of handling identity and access management (IAM).

The legacy approach
In the past, organizations used to deploy Active Directory (AD) when in need of managing permissions and controlling access to internal resources on the company network, but the Microsoft service is only available for Windows devices and not designed to integrate with other platforms. This traditional tool also means that businesses have no other choice but to maintain an on-premises authentication infrastructure.

With the Linux and Mac systems growing rapidly and gaining market visibility, however, AD is proving to be insufficient for the modern workplace. Plus, the growing dependence on various software-as-a-service (SaaS) products and third-party cloud platforms also seems to be an undeniable trend, so it’s more important than ever that companies start shifting to a vendor-neutral solution to prevent the issue of identity sprawl.

Onboarding gone wrong
Most companies employ a heterogeneity of services nowadays, such as Google Cloud, Microsoft 365, Slack and other productivity tools. For this reason, lacking a streamlined approach can severely complicate the onboarding process for the IT team and even lead to a hefty amount of manual work. This could also frustrate the new hires and reduce their likelihood of staying with the company if they’re unable to easily obtain access to all the necessary tools and resources on day one.

According to a study by Gallup, 88% of the newly hired said their employers did a poor job onboarding them, while Digitate pointed out that negative onboarding experience makes people twice as likely to start looking for a new job in the immediate future.

Directory service revolutionized
Fortunately, cloud directory might just be the answer for IT admins to maintain process efficiency while making sure that new coworkers don’t lose their patience before even fully onboarded. In a cloud-based directory, there’s no need to host an on-site server, and different OS, devices types, platforms and services can all be accommodated, with no add-ons or extra overhead required.

C2 Identity is one such service that allows the IT staff to manage all user accounts and login authorization from a centralized console. In addition, admins have the option of creating permission presets based on job functions, so access can be granted to new members instantly using this grouping feature under a role-based model.

Don’t overlook the offboarding duties
Just as everything runs its course, employee turnover is also inevitable in the lifecycle of a company’s workforce. But just because people are leaving doesn’t mean that you can simply wave them goodbye without implementing proper offboarding measures. According to research by TechRepublic, about 20% of organizations said “they have experienced data breaches by ex-employees,” while 48% of those surveyed said “they are aware that former employees still have access to corporate network.”

To prevent from possible data leakage caused by improper offboarding practices, IT teams need to revoke standing access in a timely manner. With C2 Identity, admins can disconnect members from all related services once their employment is terminated — just by changing user settings from the console, without having to log every single user out. Thanks to the identity-defined perimeters and role-based right-sizing, companies can guard the keys to their business kingdom more effectively.

And it gets you further…
In other words, C2 Identity is a versatile platform with strong compatibility that enables cross-OS device management and integration across various services. By providing group-defined IAM policies and a centralized console, it helps systemize, speed up and safeguard your onboarding and offboarding procedures, which contributes to higher employee satisfaction, administrative efficiency as well as data security.

Apart from running fully in the cloud, C2 Identity also gives you the option of building a low-latency hybrid architecture. Simply create an on-premises LDAP node using a Synology NAS or deploy a Docker container, and you can easily handle the login verification for services on the intranet without connecting to the cloud. A set up like this greatly reduces the reliance on internet connection, allows fast offline authentication, and provides an affordable alternative for companies that might want to control cloud-related costs by hosting part of their IAM process on the local network.

C2 Identity now offers a 30-day free trial. Visit us for more information, or learn more about how to get started.
