Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you will have noticed that things are not going so well for us humans these days: wars and atrocious conflicts, drastic environmental changes, pandemics and chronic diseases, economic uncertainty, prejudice and inequity… We’re facing many challenges that are complex, unpredictable and interconnected.

These challenges take us to uncharted territories, with no proven solutions or expertise.

Many of us deal with this by doing what we have always done before: we try to solve conflict with force, we try to combat over-consumption by encouraging a new type of consumption, we try to cure multifactorial diseases like cancer by targeting one factor at a time. We seem to be oblivious to the teachings of time: that these solutions are at best short-term fixes, and at worst, seeds for bigger problems in the long-term.

And so we are stuck, gradually digging ourselves into a deeper darker hole.

A well-respected economist once told me that the human race is approaching the point of collapse, that we messed up past the point of being able to repair the damage we created ourselves. It’s too late, he said.

He might be right, but I don’t want things to be this way. Not for me, definitely not for my children.
