ABOUT THE PRODUCTIVE CITY-SHAWEI
Shawei Village Exploration Workshop
Summary:
The duration of the workshop will be 10-days which will consists of three separate workshops with different themes. Students will be divided into three groups based on their own interests and attend one of the three workshops: mapping, public art/product design, community vision.
- The first workshop involves making a map of the Shawei Village and also its connection within the larger PRD area. Students will be creating a map and identifying the available resources of both Shawei and its regional connectivity.
- The second workshop aims to help the students create a piece of artwork or product that is inspired by the idea of productive city, by using the resources offered by the urban village.
- The third workshop is about the students’ vision of Shawei Village’s future by studying previous models of productive city, conducting fieldwork, and research. The goal is to come up with a possible plan for the village that exemplifies the idea of productive city and how the city can grow economically.
In the end, students are expected to create a Powerpoint presentation to show their final project, and how they got there.

Mapping Workshop:
Through in-depth research of Shawei, students will create a 3D map of the village, including its infrastructure, shops, houses, processing plants and other areas. This will entail visiting the village to do on field investigation and analysis. Thinking about the social values of these areas, the economic value and their connection with the city. Analyze these present situations, and think about how to take these factors into account and their socioeconomic significance. Suitable for students who are interested in learning humanities, social sciences, and thorough research experience. The results will be exhibited at the Seoul City Biennale.

Target Results: Analyzing Shawei Village and its contact with the Pearl River Delta region. Developing skills to use the laser cutter to complete map.
Public Art / Product Design Workshop:
Public Art: Creating large-scale works of art through the use of resource materials available from the village. Change the perception of the messy and dirty village, so that it may be viewed as a village full of creativity and inspiration. Think about how art is can change the city in a different way, protecting the community.
Product design: Using existing resources from the village, 3D printers, and laser cutter machines to design a valuable product. A prototype of the product will be made and will be sent to the factories in Shawei to execute students’ idea. This emphasizes the value and speed of production-oriented cities.

Target results: Rich product development skills. The final completion of the public art / product will be held in the Future + exhibition.
Village and Community Outlook / Business Development Workshop:
Learn the model of the productive city and look into the future of the Shawei community. Through research, questionnaires, etc., learn the existing development model of Shawei. After the field visit, make a future planning of the Shawei community. Thinking how to balance gentrification and the original economic model of the village. Suitable for students interested in economics, business, real estate development and urban planning.
