Meet Our Rail & Transit Engineers — Part 3

Trung Nguyen, P.E., Senior Rail Engineer

Why did you choose to become a rail and transit professional?

In college, I accepted an internship opportunity with an engineering company based in Orlando. During that time frame, my focus was on track design. I had learned the necessary skills to continue pursuing a career within the rail and transit industry and have not stopped since then. Eventually, I also began to be involved in other disciplines such as roadway design and traffic operation projects. However, I will always find track design to be my favorite discipline.

What are some of the most memorable projects you have worked on and why?

I actually don’t have a specific favorite project. They all seem equally valuable and memorable to me because you have to always put your best effort into each and every project. I do have to mention that it is the people at T.Y. Lin International that have helped me grow as an engineer and expand my knowledge throughout my career.

What trends do you see in the rail/transit market or in the industry as a whole?

I strongly believe that the rail/transit market is currently growing, and for multiple reasons. For starters, there has been an increase in demand for fuel efficiency due to it’s scarcity. Another reason has been the increasing demand for bulk freight transportation, which contributes to the growth of services in the rail and transportation industry.

What do you enjoy about working at T.Y. Lin International?

I enjoy working at T.Y. Lin International because it offers me opportunity to work with great people and on impressive projects.

What advice do you have for engineers just starting out in their careers?

My advice for entry-level engineers is to always ask questions because it is part of the learning process. It does not end after the training, there is always something new to learn. Also, work hard!
