Does the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra really need a S-Pen?

Recently, I made the leap from iPhones to Android phones and have been on the hunt for my next device. Naturally, I dove into exploring top-tier Android flagships, and many rave about the Samsung Galaxy S series. But, when I got a hands-on look at the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, I found myself questioning the necessity of its staple Stylus.

It’s not that it’s a nuisance or useless to me; I just wonder about its indispensability. Wouldn’t that space serve better for a larger battery or another feature? I get that it’s a hallmark of the Galaxy Ultra line, yet I suspect most won’t tap into its full potential. I aim to weigh its pros and cons to shed light on why the S Pen might not be crucial for the S24 Ultra.

Pros of the S Pen in Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Starting with the perks, the S Pen’s remote control capability, especially for the camera, stands out to me. I love setting up my phone on a mini tripod for self-timed shots. Previously, I used a Bluetooth button with my iPhone for this. The S Pen elevates this with gesture controls and button functions, allowing for mode switches, track changes, and more. It’s a nifty feature that fits a flagship’s bill.

Moreover, the S24 Ultra has ditched the curved screen for a flat display, enhancing comfort for drawing and note-taking. While useful for annotating screenshots or doodling in photo editors, I doubt its mass appeal.

Handwritten notes could be a draw for some. I lean towards the on-screen keyboard, but for those who cherish penmanship, the S Pen is invaluable. While these are the only uses that came to mind during my hands-on time, real-world applications might reveal more. I’m curious about any unique S Pen uses you’ve discovered. I’d love to hear about any unique uses of the S Pen in your replies.

Cons of S Pen in Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

On the flip side, my gripe boils down to being billed for an S Pen I seldom need. If you’re eyeing a Samsung flagship for its quality and Android experience, the S Pen is non-negotiable, adding to the cost for an accessory that might see minimal use.

Why isn’t there an S24 Ultra variant sans S Pen, perhaps with a beefier battery or other enhancements? Spending $1300, I’d want every feature to count.

The S Pen’s role in Samsung’s lineup reminds me of Apple’s brief flirtation with 3D Touch — introduced, then axed when deemed non-essential. Perhaps the S25 Ultra should make the S Pen optional, offering versions with and without, catering to user preference. So you could pay extra for a version with a slightly smaller battery and a stylus or a version with a slightly larger screen and a stylus. I think users would respond positively to such a solution.

Best smartphone for S Pen

But what about S Pen aficionados who choose Samsung for this feature? Surprisingly, beyond the Ultra, no other flagship offers this niche. I think the stylus is more suited for tablets and large screens. Even though smartphones have become huge, they are still not large enough to necessitate such specific input devices.

Integrating the S Pen with the Galaxy Fold could be a game-changer. With its expansive display and robust capabilities, the Fold blurs the line between phone and tablet, making it an ideal host for the S Pen. I think the S Pen would be much more fitting in it. Moreover, the current Fold model supports it; the challenge lies in seamlessly incorporating it into the design.
