Taxpayers in India recently had witnessed a change in Income Tax slabs. The new taxation is optional for this financial year,
hence this is important for us to make an informed selection between old and new tax system. This dashboard in Tableau helps
clear some doubts around the question and therefore help us make a right choice.

Tableau dashboard hosted in Tableau Public

The flow of the dashboard is from top to bottom and works after getting following three user provided inputs.
1. Gross Annual Taxable Income
2. Deductions availed under Old Tax system
3. Deductions availed under Old Tax system

There is an instant answer just below the first input where financial state: Richer or Poorer is depicted graphically. At the back end, Tableau evaluates the tax under Old and New systems and for a deeper breakdown, there are visuals below.

Overflowing Bar Chart

The net payable tax under both the systems is calculated and visualized with the help of an overflowing tank style bar chart.
Just as in the case of a water purification plant where water flows to the next stage tanker after getting treated from the
previous stage tank, the total income is shown as capillaries of different income slabs and taxes are depicted as water in
the capillary. This is not an out of the box visual in Tableau, hence needs some calculation to be done to achieve the effect.

A New Insight into Parameters

A parameter in Tableau is just like a variable in programming language with no relation to underlying data. Taking an example
of Sample Superstore, if we add a bar Dynamic Sales driven by a Parameter Sales in a visual with Sales bar by Product Category,
the Dynamic Sales cannot spread across Product Category due to its disconnect from the data. Therefore in these cases, parameter
can just be like a factor multiplied to the data. Therefore, going back to the visual of overflowing bar chart, the capillaries
of income after deductions though appearing to be driven from parameters, are ultimately derived from the field Annual Income in data.
