Smoothie Sunday is a Tablecrafter series on creating easy-to-prepare and nutritious blended drinks.
Slightly sweet with a hint of tartness, this carrot smoothie surprises tastebuds with a kick from ginger and turmeric. Carrots can do more for you than just add crunch to your salad: its muted flavor also complements fruits well, which is why we’ll pair today’s recipe with bananas.
As for our spices — while most people can easily identify turmeric as a predominant feature of Indian cuisine (curry in particular), they usually don’t think of it beyond being an ingredient. A cousin of ginger, turmeric reputedly soothes a variety of ailments (from ulcers to arthritis to heart disease) and has been consistently part of herbal remedies in the traditional cultures of China, India, and Indonesia.
This rhizome has a warm, pungent, and bitter flavor and can easily stain clothes a bright yellow, so take care. Its prominent hue adds the vibrant, recognizable yellow to soups, sauces, and curries. And now we’re going to add it to our smoothie.
