Lifelong Lessons We’ve Learned From Mom

Mum’s the word.

Where would we be without our moms? Well, quite literally nowhere. But on a more spiritual level? We’ve learned everything we’ve ever needed to know from our mothers.

Of course we didn’t always listen as little rascals, but the tenets we’ve latched on to and carried into our adult lives are amongst the most important in life—and ones that will be passed on for generations. So, with Mother’s Day just around the corner, we figured the least we could ever do is share the lessons that have so crucially shaped us into the individuals we are today.

Never lose your sense of humor

Because what’s life without being able to laugh at yourself?

Never make decisions when you’re angry

Be careful with your words. Once they’re said, they can only be forgiven — not forgotten.

All things should be in moderation

Whether that means having a glass of tequila every other night or indulging in some killer Mexican food on the weekend, do what makes you happy.

Treat everyone the same, whether they’re the housekeeper or the CEO

We’re all just humans trying to get by.

Always say please and thank you — no matter who you’re talking to

Show some respect. And don’t underestimate the impact you have on others — one simple compliment can make a lifelong imprint.

Ask for what you need

Asking isn’t always easy. But do you want to live your life knowing that one simple question could have led you in an entirely different direction?

Keep family close

Blood is thicker than water. But, of course, always keep your enemies closer (just kidding, moms).

Treat your kids like adults

Then they can never be too spoiled, right? You’ll develop a sense of mutual respect that’s paramount for a parent/child relationship.

People always worry more about themselves than they do about you

Reality is harsh. But if you think someone’s focusing on that bad new haircut of yours, think again.

Everyone has a story

Each person on this planet has a unique story to tell, lessons to teach and wisdom to share. And mothers just so happen to be leading the way.

You don’t have to attend every fight you’re invited to

Not all parties are made equal.

Take care of yourself

Give yourself some love. Eat food that’s delicious to you and your body. Engage in loving practices, whether that’s meditating for five minutes each morning or taking a bath before bed.

Complaining is a waste of time

Not only does this bring toxic energy into your own life, but it likewise affects those around you. Don’t be a Debbie Downer.

Travel

Always seek out new experiences to discover what feeds your soul. Do you feel at home in the mountains? Then go. Have you always wanted to see the Eiffel Tour? Book it to Paris pronto. Sure it’s cliché, but life really is too short.
