Each hood has its own unique attributes, and while there’s a undeniable ebb and flow of trending areas, we’ve compiled a list of five sub-cities that you should definitely keep an eye on in 2019. Whether you’re looking for a prime piece of real estate or LA’s next best restaurant, these neighborhoods are the real deal.
Culver has swiftly become one of the most sought-after locales in Los Angeles to both put down roots and explore. The neighborhood is remarkably expansive, which has likely overshadowed its hip personality in recent years. But, let it be known that Culver City is going through a superbly chic revival. One part nostalgia, one part modern design, the city-within-a-city now inspires expressions like “nascent Chelsea” and “L.A.’s new restaurant mecca.”
So, let’s begin—shall we? With epic eateries, cozy cocktail bars, vibrant art galleries and high-end boutiques, Culver City redefines what it means to be a one-stop destination. If you’re looking for a trendy eatery, be sure to check out Vespertine (which tops our list of LA’s most insane dining experiences), Father’s Office (best burger in LA—yup, you heard us), A-Frame and Hatchet Hall, while Platform is a luxury shopping complex with upscale shops, restaurants and creative pop ups.
Not far from Culver lies Mar Vista, yet another uber trendy LA hotspot. Replete with tree-lined streets and a comforting small-town vibe, Mar Vista is surprisingly amongst the most cultured and creative gems in all of Los Angeles. Oh, and did we mention it’s super central, too? Talk about win-win. If you’re looking for urban-meets-suburban, Mar Vista is absolutely it.
This LA gem has garnered some serious buzz over its restaurant game as of recent, including joints like The Mar Vista, Atmosphere Mar Vista and Little Fatty. And, for pre-dinner cocktails (of course), head to Accomplice for innovative drinks known as riffs and classics. For some chic shopping, be sure to check out the Tortoise General Store and Inland, then hit up the Mar Vista Art Walk for a totally classic, hipster experience.
Between the Westside and East LA sits one of the freshest, funkiest and most central locales in Los Angeles—hence the name. Mid City is brimming with diversity, unique architecture and picturesque palm tree promenades, and while it’s been thought of as mostly residential in recent years, this hood is making a strong name for itself when it comes to delicious eats, cultural attractions and all around good vibes.
First thing’s first, check out Mid City’s stellar attractions. Hit up LACMA for a fun day at the museum, take an iconic Instagram photo in front of the Urban Light, experience the weirdness that is the La Brea Tar Pits and, by all means, stop by the Original Farmers Market. Now, you’re probably going to be hungry. Take a seat at Jon & Vinny’s for tastebud-blowing Italian, Son of a Gun for innovative comfort food and Animal for epic meats.
If you aren’t acquainted with West Adams, buckle your seatbelt. One of the most historic neighborhoods in Los Angeles, West Adams (located in South LA) is teeming with old mansions and an undeniable sense of community. But, that’s not to say this area is going through a totally modernized revival. Beyond the incredible architecture lies a bevy of hip and up-and-coming local treasures.
Nonetheless, if you’re heading to West Adams for a day of exploration, be sure to do a driving tour of the neighborhood’s most iconic homes. Then it’s time for a some good eatin’ and drinkin’. Coffee bar and restaurant Highly Likely just opened on Jefferson between La Brea and Buckingham, and the joint is making a killer name for itself with natural, minimalist interiors, incredible brew and a delicious breakfast menu with favorites like the Breakfast Sando, Japanese Breakfast Bowl and Highly Burrito. Oh, and if you’re hankering for some classic seafood in a wonderfully divey ambiance? Say no more. Head to Mel’s Fish House.
