Sig Sauer P365 NRA Edition
The original high capacity ultra sub compact 9mm that started an entire genre and still reigns supreme.
When the Sig Sauer P365 first hit the market, it was plagued with issues. Just do a simple Google search for “p365 issues” to have several articles come up, or just read this article from my friends at Craft Holsters that sums it up pretty nicely: 5 Worst Sig Sauer P365 Issues. Now I think when you are going to push the envelope and develop arms that are on the cutting edge, you’re going to have issues. The true test is how you handle that. I believe Sig is the most innovative firearms company, and they are no stranger to problems with their ground breaking firearms. However Sig is very good at fixing those problems too. This kept me from initially buying a p365 until they got all the kinks out.
I ended up going with the NRA Edition because I love the Coyote Tan it comes in. I also added a Hogue Grip which not only makes this beauty of a little pistol even more attractive but also makes it feel that much better in my and as well. The instructions with the hogue grip say to do all these extra gymnastics like heating the grip to get it to go on. I did not find any of these necessary. It wasn’t the easiest to get on but I was able to pull it over the handle manually in a couple minutes of wiggling and it stays in place with a perfect fit. I think it’s ease of install might be environmentally factored tho, for me in the warm humid mountains I had no issues.
OK so let’s talk about the pros of this gun. The primary pro of this gun, is if you want as much capacity in as small a package as possible, there is no beating this. I thought I was going to go with the flush 10 round magazine, but ended up liking the extended 12 round magazine better — in looks, feel, and of coarse, capacity 😉. Speaking of magazines, many variations of the p365 ship with 3 magazines. This one came with two 10 round mags, one flush and one slightly extended, and the extended 12 round magazine pictured above. It also comes standard with day/night sights. It has good serrations on both the front and the back of the slide, making it easy to rack from any angle and is fairly easy to shoot for a small handgun.
OK so let’s talk about the cons. The biggest con is it’s initial history, many people are still afraid to try the p365 because of it’s issues on first release. However those have mostly been solved and should not prevent anyone from trying out this awesome firearm. Even though it does come with night sights, I find them a little dim in the dark, I would much prefer if they were just slightly brighter. I think I am more accurate shooting my Kimber Micro 9, but I have also shot that a lot more, so I might just need to get more practice with this. Finally, you might consider this a pro or a con, but there is no external safety on this firearm whatsoever. No manual safety, no trigger safety, nada. For me personally, using this as a carry gun, and keeping it in a holster, that is pretty much ideal but YMMV.
