This was quietly a bad trade for Boston. It might make both teams better (if the Lakers can turn the picks into Paul George) and that hurts both of Boston’s big draft pick assets. The Nets still won’t be good but they’re no longer definitely-worst-in-the-NBA, and the Lakers + PG put next year’s 2-to-5-only pick almost totally out of reach.
Brooklyn is essentially paying 23m a year for DAR with the Mozgov tax. This deal is the opposite — they were already paying a Nicholson tax to get Jarrett Allen’s draft pick. That tax is now a write off from Crabbe’s deal. Nicholson was dead money. Crabbe is only a marginal $11m cost per year.
