Both are large. Both are unlikely. Both are routinely ignored or downplayed by advocates on different sides of the argument. — I recently wrote an article arguing that climate change is an optimization problem to be solved calmly and rationally, not an emergency that deserves precedence above all else. After a lively discussion, an important question emerged: How should we value “fat tail” risks in the optimization exercise?
