It does not seem like Google’s products play very well with each other. If you run Google VPN, sometimes it can trigger Google Chrome’s malware detection to think you are suddenly browsing from an unfamiliar location and cause issues. After searching online for possible solutions, and going through the hassle of Google’s “this is for your own good” so you must reset all of your credentials now, as there is malware detected, it seems the only viable solution for the moment is to disable Google Chrome’s malware protection settings.
