In this installment of “equity corner,” we’re spotlighting grantee Dignity In Schools, an organization that works to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. Over the summer, Dignity In Schools relaunched its platform from Counselors Not Cops to Community Not Cops. From Dignity In Schools: We know there are counselors, social workers and other school staff who criminalize students in various ways including the use of seclusion, restraint and institutionalization, so simply having these staff replace police is not enough if they adopt a dehumanizing approach. For this updated platform we wanted to expand our vision for schools to not just name particular roles in schools, but to understand we want a fundamental shift from harsh, unwelcoming environments to building real community amongst students, parents and school staff.
