If you want to be a Red socialist (i.e., with Marx, the working class, The Internationale, and all that old stuff) join the Socialist Party. The Greens are something else. If we were the same as the Reds (with just a little eco-twist) there would be no particular reason to have a separate, new, distinctive thing called Green politics.

It was my privilege to jointly edit and publish Green Horizon Magazine with John over a span of twenty years. He was the one who conceptualized and initiated this distinctive publication — a print magazine covering the international Green politics movement from the perspective of this country’s state-based ecological parties. Readers of and contributors to the magazine appreciated John’s unerring guidance. They also were aware of his lifelong commitment to the movement, within which John wore many hats and played many roles. Marx was the quintessential modernist. Most leftists still keep thinking in terms of “historical progression” from capitalism to socialism. . . . keep thinking in terms of the capitalist system being The Problem; a “more advanced” system being The Solution.
