Toward the end of his life, in 1880, Marx was interviewed by John Swinton (a journalist for The Sun). As the interview drew to a close, Marx suggested a walk along the coast to the beach. "What is it?" John inquired during an interspace of stillness, referring to the question of the final law of being. After a brief pause, in a very deep and solemn tone, Marx responded, "Struggle," as he gazed out over the raging sea and the restless horde upon the beach.
