Good comparison of how other companies are handling sunsetting of hardware products. Nest is prominent company and they are bound to be scrutinized/criticized more compared to many others. In my opinion Nest is benefited the IoT movement more than the harm it is perceived to be doing as per the Wired article.
It is true that there has been a shift in the concept of “ownership” and device lifespan with the smarter devices being created now. It used to be that you would upgrade over time as you were drawn to the new features of newer devices or your old devices slowly broke down.
