Thanks for this. We had popcorn and toast for Thanksgiving. Walnuts and oranges for Christmas. “Bear” sandwiches were two pieces of bread jammed together. Both parents worked. Still poor back then. And I never met people more generous than the dirt poor.
Is it maybe just possible we’re overthinking this?
Maybe the truth is that the uneducated actually don’t want disposable income, and food on the table, and having their grandparent living in a heated home.
We know for a certainty they would rather face an agonizing death, along with their children…
