What you call "Combinator" is in Cycle.js "transposition" https://github.com/cyclejs/cycle-dom/blob/master/src/transposition.js
They are indeed powerful and underestimated/unexplored.

Is there a reason you chose to use this over the ReplaySubject?

A replay subject will replay the last n values on subscription, where n is the value passed to the constructor. Although you could pass 1 and always get the last value returned, I think that the documentation description fits the use case very well in this situation.
