The only problem with your counter examples are that none of them are Mary Sues. I think you’re not quite getting the core issue with a Mary Sue. It isn’t necessarily that Mary Sues are perfect and good at everything (although that is a big part of it); the real core of the issue is that everything comes too easily for Mary Sues. When I first started reading this article I was outraged. Like many people here I believed that Rey was a godsend, finally the strong female chracter we have all been waiting for. I couldn’t believe the blatant disregard for the power of her role. Also like most people, I assumed that I was right and you were wrong, that is until I kept reading.
