The only monastery in the Danube Delta — This breathtaking haven is Stipoc Monastery, also known as St. Athanasius Hermitage, and it offers visitors a place of tranquility. Ten orthodox monks lead a life of prayer and devotion on a strip of land, far out in the Romanian Danube Delta Reserve. Amongst the reeds and birds of the largest wetland reserve in Europe, the monks largely sustain themselves from land and water. The little church was only constructed 15 years ago and is built entirely of wood in a style that resembles the famous monasteries in nearby Moldavia. Its interior and furniture are beautifully carved with motifs and images that reflect its unique environment.
