I Fall Asleep, Standing There Like That

The paper before my eyes, slightly turning yellow

With a steel pen I chisel in black characters, some strokes deep, some shallow

Many years ago, my dad enrolled to be one of the first Canadians to go into Space. He successfully made it through a few rounds of application, but in the end, wasn’t one of the chosen few. Like at so many other times in his life, my dad fell just short of reaching the stars.

Im crying as he holds my hand. He’s repeating the demons whispers to me. 
“Im a burden”
“Just let me die like I’ve wanted to so many times”
“Im not worth anyones help”
“It’s better for everyone if I just go so everyone can get on with their lives”
