Proper filtration is key to keeping your pool water clean and safe to swim in. Your filter is actually a pretty simple device. It sits after your pump in your pool equipment setup. Water flows into the filter near the top and it moves through a filtering medium via gravity and exits the filter back into the next stage of your plumbing. There are a number of different filtering materials — typically sand, diatomaceous earth (DE), and cartridge filters (typically made of polyester). It is important to regularly service the filter so that it is operating properly. We will go into more detail on how to do this in future articles, but basically it entails back-washing and /or replacing and cleaning your filtering material. This will vary depending on the type of material that your filter uses.
