As summer break is soon approaching, we wanted to touch on an essential topic, the social-emotional state of our students. The last two months of remote learning have been overwhelming, and our students have also been experiencing hardships and stress.

Some students may have experienced anxiety, fears over losing loved ones, concern over their parent’s job situation, the burden of taking care of younger siblings, missing their friends and the social aspect of school.

Even though we no longer have frequent in-person communication with our students, it is so essential to maintain a strong relationship and keep a check on their well-being. We have to build a sustainable method and have regular communication with our students that does not revolve around schoolwork.

Tailor-ED integrates a whole-child approach, which highlights the socio-emotional needs of students along with their proficiency. At Tailor-ED, we want to make reaching every student as easy and as simple as possible, which can help you tremendously to understand your students from afar.

How can you use Tailor-ED to evaluate the socio-emotional state of your students?

Using Tailor-ED Pre-Assessment and Exit Tickets, you can get dipper insight about five additional SEL factors such as motivation, focus, memory, social aptitude, and confidence. These results will help you understand students’ social-emotional needs better and adapt your instruction accordingly.

For example, your exit tickets include questions such as:

  • Social: “I would like to work with the students in my group again.”
  • Confidence: “I get good grades in math.”
  • Motivation: “I prefer work that is challenging so I can learn new things.”
  • Memory: “Do you find it difficult remembering what homework you need to do?”

And students could mark their answers using a scale of 1–5.

With a holistic understanding of your students’ needs — reaching them can be so much easier. You can even group them differently and easily select activities that can enhance all the needs of your class.

How can you use Tailor-ED Pre-Assessment and Exit Tickets results to check the socio-emotional state of a student?

After sending your Pre-Assessments or Exit tickets, check the results by choosing the relevant classroom and clicking on the “My Classroom” button at the top of your screen. Then- select the concerned student; for example, we chose Ari. Clicking or Ari’s name will lead to his profile.

On the right and middle side, you’ll see how Ari evaluated himself on a scale of 1–5 on memory, social, and focus parameters. You’ll be able to see his confidence and motivation score, as well as his proficiency level.

How can you adapt your instruction according to your students’ answers?

This is where you can be creative and use the answers to enhance your students. If you have students who score high on social aptitude — meaning they learn best with and from each other — you can plan to learn activities such as group games, jigsaws, and student-generated problems. If you have a student who scored low motivation when they are usually exhibiting high motivation, communicate with them to figure out what is the root cause for their drop in motivation.

Sometimes, all it takes is understanding the nuances of students’ motivation or social aptitude to help students grow. Knowing how the social-emotional state of students affects their performance is crucial in creating a nurturing, supportive learning environment for them.
