TAIMI’s 7 ways to be an ally in honor of Non-binary People’s Day
July 14 is International Non-binary People’s Day which celebrates the wide array of people who identify as non-binary around the globe.
In honor of the day, TAIMI — the world’s first LGBTQI+ social network and dating app decided to post a list of ways to support non-binary people and showcase your allyship on July 14th and beyond!
Now, some of you may or may not know the actual definition of non-binary. It is an umbrella term that refers to people whose gender identity goes beyond “man” or “woman”. Some non-binary people can identify with some aspects of binary identities, while others completely reject them.
Also, an important note: non-binary people’s identity can be both a man and a woman or be fluid, or completely outside the binary.
NON-BINARY is NOT the same as trans. Many non-binary people do not identify themselves as transgender. Trans people may describe themselves using a variety of terms including transgender, transsexual, gender-queer, gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, genderless, third gender, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine, and many more.
It’s very important to respect the language someone uses to define themselves.
So, what can we all do to be an ally to non-binary people? Here are a few tips from TAIMI — LGBTQI+ social network and dating app.
- Pronouns are important. Introduce yourself with your name and pronouns, and ask the other party to share their name and pronouns.
- Avoid using binary language, instead of “ladies and gentlemen” use everyone, guests, friends, etc.
- Don’t use Mr./Mrs./Ms. In cases where titles are absolutely necessary opt for alternatives such as Mx
- Avoid using father, sister, boyfriend, etc. instead use words that define the relationship not gender i.e. parents, sibling, partner, etc.
- Indicate your pronouns on social media and e-mail signature
- Don’t use he/she unless you know for sure those are the pronouns the person is using, instead use the singular they.
- Use hashtag #ThisIsWhatNonBinaryLooksLike to show your support, raise awareness and learn more about the experience of non-binary people.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to be an ally.
