The First ICO trial in Taiwan — MoonToken

In Nov. 16, 2015, we initiated a first Ethereum based ICO (Initial Coin Offering) in Taiwan during the 黑客松 Hackathon Taiwan #13 (At least I think that is an ICO.) We wanted to sell the real estate on the moon on top of blockchain technology. People can pick any 1/10000 of the moon surface (only the front side which face to the earth) to buy with one of our MoonToken equivalent to 1 Ether (at that time.) The total initial coins for sale was 10,000 MoonToken.

White paper

We assume some day Elon Musk’s SpaceX project will take us to the space and stop by the moon in a very near future. By then, some one would like to claim the land on moon is their properties and trade them to each others.

No one can claim the real estate on moon so far, even the U.S. government itself. But we like to have a decentralized way for people to register their land lease on the moon permanently.

We will issue the investors a deed for the location of the land on the moon you pick from our DApp for each MoonToken you purchase. And the DApp will automatically put this record on the Ethereum blockchain.

The MoonToken can be defined by smart contract with the ERC20 token standard, so that people can buy or sell and further trade their coins (tokens) on any token trader that supports ERC20 tokens.

We designed a user interface example (showed above) for people to interact with our DApp to buy famous area, such as the “Sea of tranquility” for just $1 Ether (equal to 1 USD at that time.)

The Team

6 team members including me, as follows, proposed this project during the hackathon. Some of us keep attending other hackathons after that.

We lost in that Hackathon

We wrote a smart contract for this project using Browser Solidity. But none of us know how to code in Solidity at that time. So we only come out with a slide, called “LUNAR MISSION ONE” to present our idea hosted on Prezi.

One of the team member also used a 3D printer to print a moon model for presenting our idea of selling the land on the moon and title lease on the Ethereum blockchain. (Here is the moon model in 3D printed)

Unfortunately , none of the judges were familiar with the blockchain and all the attendees had never heard about the blockchain, not even the ICO concept.

So, we lose the game. (Definitely, because no one knows what blockchain is.)

After words

ICO are getting more and more popular in the year 2017. By the end of May 2017, there are about 39 ICOs already listed on SMITH + CROWN, and even 33 more are coming in the near future, which are listed in ICO Countdown.

I don’t like ICO just to become another way of crowdfunding. Hopefully, people can really work hard on their awesome ideas or projects without worrying about the funding issues. Then ICO will be a way to make your dream come true.
