KIA TŪ, KIA ORA, KIA MĀORI

On receiving ministerial approval to open in January 2011, the establishment board were challenged to create a vision that would enable Tai Wānanga to be part of a wider movement. A movement committed to fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of our Māori people.

KIA TŪ, KIA ORA, KIA MĀORI was our response to the challenge, and our commitment to our Māori people. All elements are important to the future of Māori

  • KIA TŪ: Achievement and Leadership
  • KIA ORA: Healthy in mind, body and spirit
  • KIA MĀORI: Māori succeeding as Māori

Tai Wānanga is focussed on nurturing students to be confident, healthy in body, mind and spirit, and achieving high success as Māori.

KIA TŪ

History paints a picture of continuing disparity of achievement between Māori and non-Māori. The impact of overwhelming under achievement by Māori at secondary school level has a direct effect on unemployment, health and poverty. Our response is Kia Tū, raising achievement and growing leadership.

KIA ORA

According to health statistics Māori feature in the at-risk categories for diabetes, obesity and heart condition. Change needs to occur. Daily conditioning and nutritional nourishment is a commitment to a healthier lifestyle.

Students training during their daily conditioning session.

KIA MĀORI

The Kura Kaupapa and Wharekura models of education evidence the positive impact of culture, language and genealogy. As practictioners of culture, speakers of our language, repositories of genealogy, they exhibit strength and confidence. Kia Māori is our pillar of strength.

The Tai Wānanga vision has a heartbeat, it lives.
