NYC Tech twin brothers, Michael (@mgaffneyny) & Peter Gaffney (@pgaffii), NYU Poly Mgmt of Tech Graduates, are exploring #LoMa (Lower Manhattan) as an opportunity for hiring and expanding their b2b technology solutions company, BumpUp, via Take the Helm 2.0 (we made it past the first round in 1.0).

After showing up at Top Sider at Smorgasbar in LoMa on Monday evening, Mike read the RSVP and we both realized that the event was actually on Thursday and not that night. Off to a good start, we grabbed a soda outside of Smorgasbar at South St. Seaport and chatted about our business, ideas on the possibilities of personal flying, and laughed it off. We showed up on Thursday for the actual event as we listened to introductions about the Take the Helm 2.0 competition by NYC Chief Digital Officer Rachel Haot, Managing Partner of BoxGroup + Co-Founder TechStars NYC David Tisch, past winner STELLAService Co-founder John Ernsberger (who did not think they could win last year), Faiza Issa NYCEDC Director, Entrepreneurship Initiatives, and Eric Demby, who spoke about LoMa and SmorgaBar and is Co-Founder of Brooklyn Flea.
After visiting almost every incubator on MappedinNY.com and exhibiting at NY Tech Day, we realized that Lower Manhattan might be the location for our start-up.
We spoke with XO Group team representatives, SmartAsset, Plethora Mobile, and other event-goers. The food, drinks, and conversation were great thanks to SmorgasBar and the event was well-organized— sponsored by Verizon with a surprise announcement that Verizon would provide a year of Verizon Fios to the Take the Helm competition winners. The competition is a great initiative for all of NYC Tech and is something that we are honored to be a part of.
