A monument to Crazy Horse is slowly being carved into the side of a mountain in the Black Hills of Southern South Dakota, near Rapid City. The monument is similar to what is on Mount Rushmore as far as construction. It is less than 20 miles away.

Ironical perhaps, the monument is less than 10 miles from the town of Custer, which was named after Gen. George Custer.

Crazy Horse was one of the most powerful Lakota warriors and led them to two big victories in 1876 while fighting against encroachment on Indian lands. He was part of the Battle of Little Bighorn, where Custer and his army were soundly defeated.

The U.S. Army did eventually win the Indian War, but it was more difficult because of Crazy Horse.

The monument was started in 1948, and commissioned by Lakota Elder Henry Standing Bear. He chose Crazy Horse to be the subject of the memorial.
