It was two years since I had gone on a vacation, thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic. My anxiety about the virus was constantly through the roof, but after getting vaccinated, and infection levels seemingly getting lower in the summer of 2021, I kept talking about doing a small getaway, or even a staycation.

I needed to unplug from the stress of the pandemic and recharge (if that’s even possible). I tried to come up with a list of places I could go, that wouldn’t be putting myself at risk for getting sick with COVID-19. I thought to go to Hawaii for a few days, but plane tickets seemed to be expensive and travel times very long. I thought about going to Los Angeles, but California was battling high COVID infections, and maybe that wasn’t the best idea…

Early August, I caught up with my cousin from Cyprus, and she had mentioned she was going to Greece. That sparked the idea in my mind — what if I go to Greece? Going to the Greek Islands has been on my bucket list since as long as I can remember.

My family is from Cyprus, but I had never been to mainland Greece in all my years. My cousin invited me to join her on Zante, or…
