What Your Fridge Reveals About the Rest of Your House, According to Research
Can looking at your fridge reveal your tidiness habits? Research by UCLA says it probably can.
Remember in the BBC’s “Sherlock” how Benedict Cumberbatch can tell your life story just by observing the mud on your shoes or the watch on your wrist? What would he see if he looked at your fridge? According to research from UCLA, you can likely deduce the tidiness of the entire home just from eyeing the outside of the fridge. Here’s what your fridge reveals about the rest of your home.
The Relationship Between Magnets, Menus, and Mess
In Life at Home in the Twenty-First Century, UCLA shares the results of a four-year study of 32 southern Californian families in their homes. This study found that fridge panels cluttered with magnets, menus, lists, photos, and more were often part of a messy home.[1] Your tolerance for a visually-packed fridge might indicate you can live with mountains of objects throughout the house, but being “tolerant” of the untidiness doesn’t mean it comes without stress. Clearing off expired coupons, outdated calendars, and an irrelevant contact list can be a first step in decluttering your entire home, which gives your eyes and brain a break from all the piles of stuff left lying around.
Despite how much the outside of your fridge reveals, the inside isn’t to be ignored, either!

The Inside of Your Fridge and Other Hidden Places
Think keeping the outside of your fridge neat and tidy is enough? “Out of sight, out of mind” only works for so long. The inside of the fridge also hints at how families arrange other possessions and even when the last spring cleaning took place.
Why should you “spring clean” your fridge? It’s about more than tidiness. A clean and orderly fridge makes for a healthier home and family. Throw expired foods out on a regular basis and take the time to wipe down shelves so nothing sticky or gross stays around. A Provider on Takl can help you clean and organize your fridge.
Other spaces to declutter include the pantry, closets, and other storage areas. You’ll save time by always knowing where things are and by having easy access to them.
