Free writing- The gateway to new ideas

Have you slept with your blanket over your head?

It’s warm at first, comforting. You feel safe and happy. But after a point of time it stinks. You breathe the same air over and over, making the inside of your blanket as hot as a microwave.

Ideas are like this air you breathe. How many times have you played with the same idea? Again and again you reshape the same thoughts and convince yourself that it’s something new.

In this world of blunt minds and unoriginal ideas, free writing brings about a breath of fresh air. It will force you to throw aside your protective blanket and rejoice the coolness of this breeze.

What is free writing? It is an exercise of the mind in which all you have to do is let go of your conscious thoughts and write whatever comes into your head.

Set a time limit. Try to think of a topic you want to write on. Don’t try too hard, go with the first thing you think of. Then, start writing. And do not stop. Even if you can’t think of anything logical, just keep at it. This is a way to unearth all the hidden treasures of your mind. All the stories lurking at the back of your mind, right there on paper for you.

And if no ideas come of it, you would at least have a sample of the unedited writer in you.

Imagine if gravity forgot to pull us down for a day. Wouldn’t we climb over clouds and turn pirouettes in the air? Imagine the distances we would cover in one leap, the heights we would jump to with one sprint.

Stress, fear and sometimes even logic weighs down the brain like an anchor. Our brain too would want to pirouette in the air and dance around with the clouds. And freewriting is the gateway to defy the mind’s gravity.

So set aside 15 minutes every day for free writing. Share your results with us in the comments section.

Happy writing!
