The New York State Attorney General (NYAG) Letitia James has requested the disclosure of documents concerning an alleged deal made between cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex and stablecoin operator Tether. The NYAG’s memorandum of law was filed on May 3.

4. Facebook in Talks to Build Ecosystem for Planned Stablecoin: WSJ

Social media giant Facebook is said to be in talks with firms, including Visa and Mastercard, to support and fund its planned fiat-backed cryptocurrency.

A Thursday report from The Wall Street Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter,” said that Facebook has been working for over a year now to launch a stablecoin-based payments platform. The effort, internally called “Project Libra,” is aimed at development of a cryptocurrency enabling the firm’s billions of users send money to each other, as well as make online purchases.

6. Ripple Adds SBI President To Its Board of Directors

Blockchain payments startup Ripple has added new director to its board, Yoshitaka Kitao, who is currently president, representative director and CEO of Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings.

Ripple announced the news last week, saying that Kitao will be replacing the CEO of SBI Ripple Asia Takashi Okita. Kitao has over 40 years of work experience in global financial markets. He established SBI Holdings in 1999 and has previously worked with Softbank Corporation and Nomura Securities, according to the announcement.

8. Coinbase Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan Departs From the Firm

Chief technology officer at major United States-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, Balaji Srinivasan, announced his departure from the company on Twitter on May 3.

In his tweet, Srinivasan said that he had enjoyed his time at the exchange and that he will now take time off “to get back in shape — and up to speed on everything happening” when he was busy working at Coinbase.

According to an investor who compared the cost of transactions across borders, it costs between $5 and $50 to send $100,000 in Bitcoin but costs at least $1,500 to send the same amount through Paypal. That is ignoring other shortcomings of the system such as delays.

10. John McAfee Launches ‘Bitcoin Play’ App, Letting Users Earn Crypto While Testing Their Knowledge

John McAfee, the creator of the widely-used McAfee antivirus, has announced the launch of his new app, called “Bitcoin Play.”

On May 4, 2019, McAfee revealed to his over 900,000 followers on Twitter that Bitcoin Play is now available on Google Play for Android users. According to the eccentric crypto millionaire, the Bitcoin Play app has a “family friendly option” and a separate version for adult users which features his “voice cursing at [the users’] ineptitude.”
