Parallels between Game of Thrones and OpenAI saga are hillarious, but before we dive in to that some context. Skip if you know already.
Over the past weekend, the tech world witnessed a dramatic upheaval at OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab known for its development of ChatGPT. In a surprising turn of events, Sam Altman, the CEO who steered OpenAI into new frontiers, was removed from his position. This unexpected change has sent ripples through Silicon Valley, with implications that are still unfolding.

- Friday: Removal of Sam Altman in abrupt fashion
- Friday: Crucial board member and founder Greg Brockman resigns in response
- Friday: Resignations of director of research Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Madry head of a team assessing potential risks from AI, researcher Szymon Sidor
- Saturday: Board is debating if they should bring Altman back
- Saturday: Altman and Brockman announce plans to seek investment to start new AI company
- Saturday: Atlman participates in OpenAI board meeting negotiating return
- Sunday: Negotiations fail and OpenAI announces Emmett Shear, cofounder of Twitch as new CEO
- Monday: 505 OpenAI employees threaten to resign if board does not resign and bring back Altman
- Monday: Microsoft announces that they hired Altman and Brockman to head new AI devision and welcome all other OpenAI employees
- Tuesday: Altman is back to being a CEO
And so on… What a show… There is more. You can read more here and even that is not everything… Like Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo being on the board of OpenAI while having his own AI platform Poe… Conflict of interests…
I do not know about you but I am tired already from all the twits and turns of this epic drama. What do you do at such moments? You turn to humour.
Comparing it to Game of Thrones
I am fan of Game of Throne books. TV show was good too for some time. So seeing all that drama and backstabbing and manoeuvring I posted on LinkedIn:

House Baelish of Harrenhal

- And Adam D’Angelo of Quora is an ethical and kind innovator, who helps and supports others with his technology, or is he?
Not similar, AI is correct here. But in this story D’Angelo having conflict of interest did backstab OpenAI.
Alternative and better House Tyrell of Highgarden
- House Tyrell is known for its wealth, influence, and strategic adaptability. They are a major power in the realm, often out manoeuvring other houses despite not always being the first to act.
- Just like Apple, who is late to AI race, but discounting it is a grew mistake like Lannisters learned about Tyrells 😉
May be OpenAI should be considered 7 kingdoms and board of directors a small council.

Why is this hilarious?
In first season/book of Game of Thrones house of Lannister played main role in fall of Eddard Stark, Lord of the house Stark. First calling him to capital as hand of the king.
Execution of Eddard Startk led to a new civil war in Westeros.
Here AI itself chose OpenAI as house of Stark with Altman. And Microsoft as wealthy and powerful house of Lannister. Microsoft played a big role in current OpenAI situation by giving OpenAI 10B in Azure compute credits and building data centers for AI. That made ChatGPT possible. And ChatGPT strained the organisation and out D’Angelo in conflict of interests. Altman was hand of the king here. If king is Satya Nadella.
In reality it was not Microsoft who executed Altman here though, it seems like it was D’Angelo.
Its a hilarious interpretation and that could as well be entirely wrong 😉 We may never know. But probably we will in some Netflix documentary in a year.
