Superheroes in Class
Learning to read, write and…save the world?
The new school year, which started last week in Greece and Bulgaria, reminded me of a story I wrote for my son when he was a first grader. He loved it — it gave him confidence and pride as he went through the day. I hope it takes you back to your own first day of school and makes you smile at the child you once were — the child who still lives inside you, occasionally reminding you of its presence with a little burst of mischief or play. 😊
Instead of his school uniform, Bobby appeared in the bedroom doorway wearing his Spider-Man costume.
His mom dropped the pancake spoon into the bowl and placed her hands on her hips. Her lips pressed into a thin line.
“What’s that? What are you wearing?”
“I want to be a superhero!” Bobby explained. “I’m going to school like this — Spider-Man!”
“Bobby, please, go change. We’re going to be late. You don’t want to be late for the first day of school, do you?”
“Spider-Man can do anything,” said Bobby. “He saves people, fights the bad guys, and can even learn to read, write, and do math in one second. He’ll never get bad grades!”
