Setting Sail
24 hours of travelling and I have my feet up, seconds away from a cold beer.
I keep telling myself, 24 hours isn’t so bad, but for a country on the same time zone as Denver — a 10 hour flight — it actually seems pretty excessive. We had 1 connection in Frankfurt which went smoothly and we opted for a taxi from the airport, so there isn’t a lot of room for improvement.
I guess this is part of the reason Costa Rica is so good for the modern backpacker. It has a growing tourist industry, but in October — their ‘winter’ — no one comes. We’re sat in a hostel, in one of the most popular towns, and it’s eerily quiet.
Furthermore, it’s clear that someone is lying about their ‘winter’. It’s currently 30degs and it’s just hit midday. The thunderstorms that have littered the weather forecasts must be hiding behind all this blue sky.
The weather is actually beautiful. The winter mist has an incredible effect on landscape early in the morning and the night time is a gentle 15degs.
Not everything is perfect though. As with many Latin America countries, there is a strong influence of U.S tourism, which has resulted in every company opting for low-exertion activities like quad bike tours, which are very much out of our budget. I’d absolutely love to just throw $20 dollar to a local and get him to show us something fun.
We did, however, get directed to a free ‘swim hall’ which turned out to be a large natural pool created by a local river. We couldn’t have been happier.
Back to my beer.
